Alicia Silverstone: Wentworth Loveseat with Velour Fabric
In Style Home - Spring 2007
At Alicia Silverstone's Los Angeles home, there's a running competition over who uses the least electricity. "My husband laughs at me," she says of her longtime love, rock musician Christopher Jarecki. "I go around unplugging things, so he loves it when I leave something on. He enjoys getting me back. We mock each other, and it's perfectly lovely fun."
Smart, exuberant and incredibly conscientious, Silverstone is fast becoming a Hollywood role model for ecologically sustainable living. "Everything we've brought into this house is environmentally sound," declares the actress, who rose to fame, ironically, after playing uber-consumer Cher in the hit 1995 film Clueless. There are solar panels on the roof, energy-efficient appliances in the kitchen, and compact fluorescent lightbulbs in every socket - not to mention the Toyota Prius she has parked in the driveway. And with the recent installation of a well-engineered heating and cooling system, her place now draws half as much power from the grid as it used to. "I love living this way," she says. "It's so satisfying and inspiring."
"Alicia really cares about the health of the planet," says Mary Cordaro, an environmental consultant who works with Silverstone to ensure that her choices are indeed eco-savvy. "She's passionate about making the right decisions."
Of course, good intentions don't always make for great decor. But not long ago, Silverstone decided to boost her home's style quotient with help from L.A. designer Sasha Emerson.
PICTURES: In the picture with Alicia: Silverstone, in a silk-cotton top by Ports 1961, relaxes on her living room sofa, which is upholstered in organic-cotton velvet; the bookcase wood is from a tree that fell on its own.
The Fireplace: Two Kim McCarty watercolors hang above the mantel, where they're flanked by a pair of Lyn Winter's abstract acrylic paintings.
